Woman Power Comes To India’s New Parliament

59 women were elected to India’s new parliament in this 2009 election. 556 women had contested the elections for 543 parliamentary seats.

Sonia Gandhi, the 62-yr old reclusive Italian-born wife of assassinated Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi, becomes the most powerful Indian politician having steered the party to its history making return to power.

The current president Pratibha Devisingh Patil is the first woman president of India.

In the 2004 elections, 45 women won of the 355 that contested. In that election Sonia Gandhi renounced power to allay fears of her ‘foreign born’ status.
