Yeh Hai Life!

It’s Time To Protect Indian Students…..In India.

In Economy, Education, Human Rights, India on June 2, 2009 at 8:30 am

The condemnation over six racially motivated attacks on Indian students in three weeks in Australia was swift. And rightfully so.  The media screamed outrage, Amitabh refused a doctorate from an Australian university, India’s PM had a chat with his Australian counterpart, and the Australian police offered stepped up security for Indian students.

Meanwhile, during the same time period, a steady stream of students in India are committing suicide over dismal exam results. These are the student suicide stats in just the past two months – 3 in Lucknow, 1 in Chennai, 1 in Kanpur, 1 more in Lucknow, 1 in Hyderabad, 1 in Noida, 1 in Kerala, 1 in Jaipur, and another one in Lucknow11 in 8 weeks. These are just the ones that made it to the news.

Young lives spent chasing the dream of a better life through education. Cut short because poor results seemed like the end of a dream. Before they could even discover there is a life beyond studies and exams.

Where is the outrage? Why no call to action? Where is the help these students need? The silence over this hidden epidemic is deafening. Its time for India to protect its students…..from themselves.

  1. We have tons of problems in India which we are working on in our own way. That does not mean that we have to be silent about racist attacks on our people.
