New Work Visa Bill Threatening Indian Outsourcing Companies Introduced

In Business, Economy, India on June 8, 2009 at 4:18 pm

Businessweek: Senators Durbin and Grassley are introducing legislation to revamp the H-1B Visa program for guest workers. The bill would not reduce the number of H-1B visas—now 85,000 per year—but contains provisions to increase oversight and enforcement and discourage outsourcing of H-1B visa holders. The most controversial new rule would bar companies with more than 50 U.S. employees from getting any additional work visas if more than 50% of their U.S. workforce is made up of H-1B or L-1 visa holders.

If the current rate of unemployment in the US continues, this bill will probably find less resistance as it makes its way through Congress and the Senate.
