Weapon In War On Dengue – Genetically Engineered Mosquito

The dengue mosquito is the most dangerous insect in the world. WHO estimates there may be 50 million dengue infections worldwide every year.

So this is Oxitech’s simple idea to fight dengue – breed engineered sterile male mosquitoes and release them in the environment. They would mate with female dengue mosquitoes, who won’t breed and have baby mosquitoes, so their population reduces.

Oxitech Ltd., is a UK firm whose RIDL technology is currently being researched and lab tested in Chennai, India.  The Bill and Melinda Gates recognized their work with $20 million to fund research. Luke Alphey, Oxitech’s founder, outlines the idea in the video below.
