India In Africa: The New Face Of Colonialism

In Business, Economy, Environment, Food/Drink, Human Rights, India, Politics on August 9, 2009 at 10:39 am

Like China, India needs fuel and energy for its 1 billion and growing population. Both governments are joining other developed nations to buy up large swathes of land in Africa. Food and biofuel crops will be grown on these African lands and sent back to the home country. Sounds like a winning proposition…till you read how the corruption involved in these deals is squeezing the poor in Africa. That this is happening with the Indian Government’s support and stamp of approval is just outrageous! Isn’t this how Britain colonized India for over 200 years???!!

(Via The Independent) The Indian government has lent money to 80 companies to buy 350,000 hectares in Africa and recently lowered the tariffs under which Ethiopian agri-products can enter India. One of the biggest holdings of agriculture land in the world is a Bangalore-based company, Karuturi Global, which has recently bought huge areas in Ethiopia and Kenya.

Up for grabs: Countries with large populations such as China, South Korea and even India are acquiring swathes of African farmland to produce food for export
