Obama Admin’s First State Dinner Goes To India. But…Why India?

In India, Politics on September 29, 2009 at 7:12 pm

So much for all the fussing about Obama ignoring India.

Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh is coming to America for a state visit Nov. 24, just before Thanksgiving. It’s a plum presidential nod of recognition for the world’s largest democracy and most stable U.S. ally in a hostile corner of the world.

But why India? AP provides an analysis, including the one possible thing that the Bush administration got right that Obama is building upon (and not having to undo).

UN says caste system is a human rights abuse

In Human Rights, India on September 29, 2009 at 7:43 am

A few hundred years late, but as they say better late than never…(Full Story at Telegraph) The UN’s Human Rights Council, meeting in Geneva, is expected to ratify draft principles which recognises the scale of persecution suffered by 65 million ‘untouchables’ or ‘Dalits’ who carry out the most menial and degrading work.

The Indian Government lobbied heavily to remove the word ‘caste’ from an earlier draft. Kudos to Nepal for supporting the move.

No Sex Please. We’re Indian…Cricketers!

In Cricket, India, Sports on September 28, 2009 at 7:41 pm

Indian cricket coach Gary Kirsten is ‘anguished’ that his name is associated with a 4-part document that told the Indian cricket team they needed to have disciplined food and sports habits coupled with good sex. Frankly it sounds like good advice for ordinary folks like us!

So instead of the obligatory India+sex=Kama Sutra reference here, we’ll substitute with the gummy bear kama-sutra courtesy the Huffington Post.

Who Needs Potatoes? Lets Just Grow Fries….and other interesting facts.

In Business, Food/Drink, GM Crops, Health, India, Science on September 28, 2009 at 7:24 am

Researchers from 12 countries, including India, got together in 2006 and have just released the genetic code mapping of the world’s most popular vegetable – the potato.

Now that we know that, the day is not far when we’ll be growing potatoes shaped as fries. Why bother with all that peeling and cutting?

And on that note, here are some other potato related facts:

  1. 2008 was the international year of the potato
  2. A third of all potatoes is harvested in China and India
  3. The potato is the first food ever grown in space
  4. Inca Indians were the first to grow the potato in about 200 BC. (lots more interesting facts at this link)
  5. McDonald’s buys more than 3 billion pounds of potatoes annually across the globe. And after 7 years, the hunt is on for a new spud for McDonald’s fries.

And speaking of McDonalds, in the US, you are never more than 145 miles by car to the nearest McDonalds.

Hence our theory that we will be growing potatoes as fries sometime in the near future!
