Yeh Hai Life!

On This Day…

In Gandhi, History, India on October 31, 2009 at 9:30 am

At 9:20 am on October 31, 1984 India’s prime minister Indira Gandhi was shot dead by two of her Sikh security guards.  Another tragedy was about to unfold later that day.  One that would haunt India and its Sikh community forever.

Over the next 5 days riots resulted in a level of carnage that shocked India and the world – thousands of Sikhs were lynched or burned alive in retaliation of Indira Gandhi’s assassination.  Two of Mrs. Gandhi’s assassins were hanged five years later, and one acquitted.  The Sikh community still awaits justice for those that perpetrated the brutal killings of over 3,000  Sikhs.
