The Liberhan commission submits its report on the demolition of the Babri Masjid in 1992 and the resulting communal riots in which thousands were killed. An uproar has resulted…not over the results of the report, but rather over the fact that it was leaked to the media.

The timeline of events of one of the worst communal riots in India since 1947 are here.

The report’s publication will not heal any wounds. It does not guarantee that communal riots will never happen again. And it definitely will not change the hearts of politicians who divide and conquer. What it offers is a chance for moderates – both Hindu and Muslim – to make a case for reasoned soul searching that can put this great nation on a path to healing the communal divide.
