No Such Thing As A Free Lunch – IPL And Press Standoff.

The Indian Premier League organiser’s attempts to impose stringent media-accreditation guidelines could result in international news agencies boycotting the Twenty20 tournament for the second time in three years. (Full post at Indian Express)

The IPL knows they have what the press wants – news traffic. The press knows they have what IPL wants – free global promotional coverage.

It’s easy to dismiss interest in the outcome of this standoff with “who cares, it’s just cricket.” Start to apply the logic to coverage to things that impact ordinary peoples’ lives, and you see the slippery slope we’re on.
