Hungry Children Eat Mud In Uttar Pradesh.

In Human Rights, India on April 5, 2010 at 7:50 pm

If you haven’t already, do read the Hunger Project series over at Hindustan Times. Some serious investigative journalism that’s getting results.

This gut wrenching testimony from the story:

“It tastes like powdered gram, so we eat it,” said Soni (5), a listless girl with a protruding belly. With most families reduced to one or two daily meals of boiled rice and salt — with a watery vegetable on a lucky day — the mud is a free but deadly option at the 20 stone quarries sustaining the poorest villagers.

And this from the state of Uttar Pradesh, whose Chief Minister shamelessly flaunts money garlands and erects statues of herself at a cost of millions of rupees. But little Soni or her family probably don’t know this.
