Wal-Mart Targets Some Of India’s Most Vulnerable – The Farmers!

In Business, Food/Drink, India on April 13, 2010 at 2:18 pm

Wal-Mart has been trying to get a handle on India’s retail industry, since opening its first store in May 2009  as reported by us earlier.  But now, they are trying their luck at food – probably the most essential item in a third-world country one would think!  But with the restrictions to not be able to sell to the consumer market themselves, Wal-Mart might find themselves in a bind.

Yet, they are already reaching out to the local farmers, by offering them more money for their product and even picking up the crop, which, to this date, is the most difficult part in the Indian farmer’s distribution challenge.

The challenges are significant. Buying and transporting produce are difficult tasks because India has millions of small-scale farmers and an agriculture system riddled with middlemen. (The New York Times)

We actually think that the challenge is to keep India true to its roots.
