60 Million Indians Who Are Considered Criminal By Tradition.

In Crime, India on April 29, 2010 at 7:36 am

This profile of the Pardhi tribe in Maharashtra is just heart wrenching. How wretched must a tribe’s fate be, that passing themselves off as Dalits is one way to get out of misery?

INSIDE his hovel of branches and rags, a grizzled pauper called Badshah Kale keeps a precious object. It is a note, scrawled by a policeman and framed by Mr Kale, proclaiming that he “is not a thief”. For members of his Pardhi tribe, who are among some 60m Indians considered criminal by tradition, this is treasure. (Economist.com)
