Trying To Plug 210,000 Gallons Of Crude Oil PER DAY Currently Leaking In US Oil Spill.

YHL regulars know we’re all over environmental disasters when they happen like brown on rice. But we’ve been generally silent on the BP Oil Spill issue currently devastating the Gulf of Mexico. Silent from being shell shocked by the scale of it all (this interactive feature from NY Times really drives home the enormity of the devastation)

The blame game will go on over here. The politicians will pretend to be VERY concerned and looking out for all our interests. Meanwhile if the Exxon Valdez is an example of punitive measures, we can be sure no one will pay the price for it. Exxon Valdea spilled over 11 million gallons of oil,  and got away with a $1.25 billion dollar fine (For comparison consider this – Exxon also set an annual profit record by earning $40.61 billion last year – or nearly $1,300 per second in 2007. That exceeded its previous record of $39.5 billion in 2006. )

Right now we can just be hopeful that they figure out how to stop 210,000 gallons of crude per day from leaking into the ocean.
