Finally! India Moves To Patent 900 Yoga Asanas.

From Bollywood remakes, video piracy, generic medicines, copycat Internet startups and other creative ‘lifting,’ India doesn’t have the greatest track record on Intellectual Property Rights. The same complacency led to it losing its ownership on yoga and medicines that have been handed down over centuries.

As yoga has moved from marginal to mainstream, US authorities have issued 150 yoga-related copyrights, 134 patents on yoga accessories and 2,315 yoga-related trademarks. (2007 Times Online article)

It’s great to hear we’ve finally caught up with the reality that is the free market.

The Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) has prepared patent formats of nearly 900 yoga asanas (postures), to prevent European and American companies involved in fitness-related activities from claiming them as their own. (Full Post at Hindustan Times)
