Bhopal Gas Tragedy – The Joke That Is The ‘Verdict.’

In India on June 7, 2010 at 7:55 am

8 people sentenced for 2 years each 26 years since the world’s worst industrial disaster at the Union Carbide plant in Bhopal killed between 15,000 – 25,000 people. Those convicted are all Indians in their 70s, and one of them died somewhere along the way. The 7 accused are already out on Rs 25,000 bail ($535/-).

The Indian Government has betrayed the victims of Bhopal for 26 years. Today’s convictions serves as further proof they really don’t give a crap.

Via BBC: More than a dozen judges have heard the criminal case since 1987, when India’s leading detective agency, the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), charged 12 people with “culpable homicide not amounting to murder”. That charge could have led to up to 10 years in prison for the accused.

However, in 1996, India’s Supreme Court reduced the charges to “death by negligence”, carrying a maximum sentence of up to two years in prison if convicted.
