In Event, Faith & Religion, India on June 14, 2010 at 7:26 am

Concludes a report by Edbert Hsu (Johns Hopkins Medical Institutions)

reports on 215 stampedes, of which 49 occurred at sporting events, 25 at musical events, 38 were political and 41 were religious. The rest (totalling 60) were due to a mixed bag of causes and were mostly spontaneous. (via Epiphenom)

India knows religious stampedes. So far this year 7 were killed at the Kumbh Mela stampede, and 63 were killed at a temple give-a-way of free clothes. The worst death toll from stampedes on record was the 1954 Kumbh Mela in which 500 were reportedly killed.

June 5 is WED – World Environment Day.

In Environment, Event, India on June 5, 2010 at 7:17 am

Happy World Environment Day to all.

It is also Day 47 of the BP oil spill that is wreaking devastation across the gulf coast. As we watch videos and pictures come through we have alternated between sorrow, frustration and absolute anger against BP and its supporters.

We have to stay positive and committed to relieving our planet of abuse. For now this UNEP map of World Environment Day activities around the world remains our beacon of hope and call to action.

Just 3 days ago we posted a piece about unsafe airport safety and security practices not knowing we’d be revisiting the issue under the sad circumstances of today. We have landed at the Mangalore airport, and though we are not aviation experts, we know from experience how scary an experience this runway is. We will find out in the next few days if in fact the length of the runway was a factor in this crash.
