We’re Sold On Shape-Ups.

In Fashion, India on June 6, 2010 at 6:10 pm

We’ve been reading about Shape-Ups, the weird looking shoes for a while now. One of us finally caved and bought the Skechers version today.  It’s day 1, so too soon to know about butt, back, leg and ab muscle toning. For now we can say confidently the weight distribution from the funky heel seems to alleviate pressure on the lower back.  The other one of us has had them for a few months now, and loves them and continues to do so. Back pain is alleviated while the glutus-maximus is getting a nice work-out. Wish they had a slightly fashion forward look though!

According to Bloomberg: Toning-shoe sales in the U.S., which totaled $17 million in 2008, increased more than eight-fold, to $145 million, last year when both Reebok and Skechers introduced their models, according to NPD Group. In the first four months of this year, toning-footwear sales skyrocketed to $252 million, 75 percent more than the total for all of 2009.

Leather Shoes Banned In Indian Schools.

In Fashion, India on May 6, 2010 at 8:02 am

Hurrah! Wish it had happened in our time. Of course back then in 80s India, we were not aware of the environmental implications or the colonial heritage of the leather shoes we wore. But we hated them all the same – they were a hideous fashion statement, heavy as wooden blocks, stank from sweaty feet, and we lost a few hours of our life that are not coming back from polishing those stupid things to a shine.

So good on the ICSE for making the call. (Full post at Telegraph)
