If You Ever Needed Proof That Politicians Have NO Shame.

In Crime, India, Politics on June 13, 2010 at 7:09 pm

Politicizing the plight of millions of victims in Bhopal is chilling and just plain disgusting. On both sides.

They (the politicians). Just. Don’t. Get. It. Do they?

What We Know About Nikki Haley.

In India, Politics on June 4, 2010 at 8:12 am

Speaking of the pathetic state of our political discourse…this is what makes for Nikki Haley headlines these days.

What else do we know?

She is also ‘pro-life’, supports tough anti-immigration laws including deportation, and the right to own guns. All incredibly vital issues while our country is reeling under a recession, an oil spill, and job losses.

Did Arundhati Roy Call Maoists ‘Gandhians With Guns’?

In India, Politics on June 2, 2010 at 6:47 pm

Times of India carries a clarification from author Arundhati Roy denying she called Maoists ‘Gandhians With Guns.’ Would’ve been nice if TOI had taken a moment to research what she actually wrote. Excerpt below from Part 3 of the 5 part series published by Guardian.

You decide what she actually meant. For us ‘Gandhi’ and ‘Guns’ in the same sentence describing Maoists pretty much equals ‘Gandhians With Guns.’ Sounds like Ms. Roy is engaged in a bit of backpedaling now that the Maoists are proving themselves ‘senselessly violent’ …without the quotation marks.

We’re moving in single file now. Myself, and one hundred, ‘senselessly violent’, bloodthirsty insurgents. I looked around at the camp before we left. There are no signs that almost a hundred people had camped here, except for some ash where the fires had been. I cannot believe this army. As far as consumption goes, it’s more Gandhian than any Gandhian, and has a lighter carbon footprint than any climate change evangelist. But for now, it even has a Gandhian approach to sabotage; before a police vehicle is burnt for example, it is stripped down and every part is cannibalized. The steering wheel is straightened out and made into a bharmaar barrel, the rexine upholstery stripped and used for ammunition pouches, the battery for solar charging. (The new instructions from the high command are that captured vehicles should be buried and not cremated. So they can be resurrected when needed.) Should I write a play I wonder—Gandhi Get Your Gun? Or will I be lynched?

Story filed under ‘some headlines you can’t make up if you tried!’

Meghalaya Health and Family Welfare Minister Rowell Lyngdoh on Tuesday admitted that he did not know the difference between AIDS and HIV.

“These are technical terms. I require notice for the reply,” Lyngdoh told legislators during question hour in the assembly, when Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) legislator James K Sangma asked him the difference between HIV and AIDS. (Full post at Hindustan Times)

Hypocrite Politician Watch: Congressman Mark Souder.

In India, Politics on May 18, 2010 at 7:21 pm

No, it has nothing to do with India. But everything to do with hypocrisy…our pet peeve.

So here’s the quote for the day from Congressman Mark Souder, a Republican congressman from Indiana, after being caught having an affair with a member of his staff.

“I sinned against God, my wife and my family by having a mutual relationship with a part-time member of my staff,” Souder said. “In the poisonous environment of Washington, D.C., any personal failing is seized upon and twisted for political gain. I am resigning rather than put my family through a painful drawn out process.” (Via HuffPo)

Note the phrasing “having a mutual relationship.”
